Dear UFRSD Community,

I am excited to share that the return of freshman sports to Allentown High School was approved last night by the Board of Education! It is great to share some really positive news with our UFRSD family.

The impact of freshman sports on our incoming students is immeasurable. Following this very challenging year, the need to support our students academically, socially, emotionally and physically is vital to their transition to high school and overall wellness.  It is without any doubt that a great number of our incoming freshmen will benefit from this decision.

The other part of the decision last night was to increase the fee for freshman athletes to $200 per sport (originally $75 per sport). Although this only covers a fraction of the costs, it does support our ability to provide freshman athletics for our students. In an attempt to make this as clear as possible, here is how each sport will be handled:

  • Sports that historically don’t have freshman teams and aren’t expected to have one (cross country, tennis, wrestling, girls basketball, softball, track) will still stay at the rate of $75 per sport.
  • Sports that will have a freshman team (soccer, field hockey, football, boys basketball, lacrosse, baseball) will be $200 per sport.
    • All freshmen, regardless of the level they play (F, JV or Varsity), will need to pay $200.
    • If there is no freshmen team, due to numbers, the fee will go back $75 and families will be refunded.
  • Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will continue to pay the $75 fee.

Later today, Mrs. Embley (AHS Principal) will be sending out information about sign ups and physicals; this will answer any questions you have about payment and scheduling physicals prior to the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Ricci – riccip@ufrsd.net – (Athletic Director) or Mrs. Embley – embleyc@ufrsd.net – (Principal).

I’m looking forward to watching our freshmen teams get back on the fields and courts!

My best,

Mark Guterl

Superintendent of Schools
